Welcome! Welcome to 2008, Animal Reiki Readers. I'm so excited to share with you all that is going on in the wonderful world of Reiki for animals! First, I am honored to present some fantastic articles in this issue, including some wonderful Animal Reiki stories, a draft horse sanctuary article, a "joy of life" meditation and a farewell to Ollie article. I hope you find them all as heartwarming as I have--thank you to all contributors! Next, there are still a few days to sign up for my Advanced Teleclass (this class is open to my students who have already completed the Animal Reiki Workshop: Core Curriculum either by correspondence or teleclass). With Love and Reiki Blessings, Reiki with Unusual Creatures Although many Reiki stories are about companion animals, I would like to tell you about some of the more unusual creatures who have chosen to accept Reiki from me. Releasing Expectations If you had asked me not so long ago if I was afraid of dogs, I would have said unequivocally, "No. Absolutely not." Cats? Never. That all changed when I adopted my dog Dasher in 2001. Dasher came with a full complement of issues, mostly revolving around fear - including leash aggression, fear of large trucks, shovels, and people wearing headphones, among other things, due to lack of proper socialization. Blossom "Blossoms" with Reiki When I first met Blossom she was lying in a pool of her own urine, her head on her paws, staring at me with the saddest eyes I've ever seen. The shelter staff told me her terrible history of abuse - the beatings, the broken bones, the cattle prods...all inflicted on this young Rottweiler to make to make a good attack dog for her drug-dealing owners. An anonymous call brought the police, who found her on a 4 foot chain with a bowl of frozen water and no shelter from the rain. Reiki Healing for Sara I am the guardian of a 6 month old Jack Russell Terrier female, named Sara. She was born the runt of the litter. She came to me as a rescue puppy. She had been stepped on, mostly not fed, hit with papers, and not taken care of for a month. She had trauma issues, food issues, a problem with her right hip, fear of everyone, fear of noises, and when she was vaccinated began seizures. United in Light: Draft Horse Sanctuary Never would I have thought then, when I became a Reiki Master (in 1998), what I would be doing with Reiki now. My journey started as I found my Reiki teachings had help so much within my Chiropractic practice, mostly with me staying with my energy. It is like most healers that we have the old behavior of sacrificing our own energy to heal others, which always seem to end in some large lesson learned to find other ways of healing by not hurting ourselves. The greatest healing comes from within. Since that time, I had sold my practice to the calling of a draft horse named Knight of Dreams. The Joy of Life Meditation This will take you to a wholesome place of beauty for the heart. Good for heart sickness (lack of love for self and others). Take a deep breath, take that breath as if it were reaching down, deep to your soul. Breathe in - you have begun your search for the soul, breathe out and you are chasing it. Continue to breathe in this fashion as you follow the meditation. Do not force the breath but do focus on its vitality. Journey to the Stars Introductory note by Kathleen: Many of you reading this article have taken my Reiki courses at BrightHaven in Santa Rosa and are familiar with the gentle little dachshund, Ollie, who was often sleeping under a blanket, but always ready to give a lesson in Reiki. Just today, February 8th, this wise old soul departed his physical body to continue his journey in spirit. He will be missed by many, and I wanted to include the following moving description from Gail Pope, President of BrightHaven, about his journey into spirit.
