Animal Reiki for Cats & Small Animals

Cats, fish, and small animals can benefit so much from the Let Animals Lead® method of Animal Reiki! As with all animals, the key to success and healing is in your approach. Remember to always let animals lead the Reiki session. They’re already very sensitive and wise in the language of energy, so they won’t need physical touch to benefit (but they might ask for it). Want to practice shifting your state of mind in ways that can help even the most sensitive cats to connect? CLICK HERE for the popular video course, “Reiki for Cats.”

Let’s Join Together to Honor the Most Important Animals in Our Lives

Do you owe a huge debt of gratitude to a special animal in your life? Perhaps an animal who helped you align more fully with your soul’s purpose? Many of you know all about Dakota, my soul dog of 16 and 1/2 years, who was the animal who first showed me the possibilities of Animal Reiki. Although he passed away many years ago, I still feel his spirit in so much of the work that I do! You can read more about this incredible dog HERE. After his passing I was …

Meet My BrightHaven Animal Teachers

Spending so much time at home during the pandemic has made me appreciate the quiet spaces in my home even more! And so, as a slow-moving project, over the past few months I’ve been redoing my home office. I’ve been trying to decide what to put on the wall across from my desk, and just a few days ago it came to me: a collage of animal faces, the faces of my favorite Animal Reiki teachers over the past 23 years of my practice. I ended up spending a couple of hours pouring through …

Blessing the Bones

This morning, we were planting some hydrangeas in my front yard, right along the perimeter of the house, when we discovered something unexpected: a fabric bag full of bones. We determined they were cat bones and were very old. I could feel from the burial place that there was still love there, the love of a family for this special feline friend, and it made me think about how time passes so quickly. Our home is over 75 years old, and I wonder about the people who have lived here in times …

Intuition and Animal Reiki

I often get questions about intuition received during Animal Reiki sessions, or what to do if an animal communicates with you during a session. I’ve written about the differences between Animal Reiki and Animal Communication HERE, but I wanted to share a bit more with you today. First of all, not everyone receives intuition, and it’s not technically a part of what Animal Reiki is. However, often when an animal begins to heal, there is an energetic shift, and if we’re sensitive, and if the animal has chosen to connect deeply with us, …

“Hands-on, Reiki-on,” for Animals?

This month’s Animal Reiki Talk is on the topic of, “The Importance of Animal Independence and Agency within the Reiki Session.” CLICK HERE to listen in to the recording. Animals’ right to agency and independence within a Reiki session is often not taken into account because of humans’ mistaken belief that we “always know better.” Unfortunately, this often causes animals discomfort and creates obstacles to trust and connection. This view also completely overlooks the incredibly important contribution animals make to the Reiki space that we share. In relation to this topic, I’ve been thinking …

Making the World a Better Place with Animal Reiki

We do not “come into” this world; we come out of it, as leaves from a tree. As the ocean “waves,” the universe “peoples.” Every individual is an expression of the whole realm of nature, a unique action of the total universe.— Alan Watts As we dedicate ourselves to helping the animals we cherish and the people who love them, it’s good to remember that we are all part of the same world, the same universe, the same energy. The more we realize how connected we are, the more our thoughts, words …

The Incredible Dog Behind World Animal Reiki Day

“In their innocence and wisdom, in their connection to the earth and its most ancient rhythms, animals show us a way back to a home they have never left.”― Susan Chernak McElroy I created World Animal Reiki Day (WARD) in 2016 as a way for animal lovers and the animal Reiki community to come together and celebrate our beloved animal friends as teachers and healers. Why February 5? This was Dakota’s birthday. Dakota was my faithful dog and Animal Reiki teacher for 16 and 1/2 years. He was the dog who gave me …

The Art of the Perfect Animal Reiki Session

What qualities create the ideal Animal Reiki session where animals are honored as equal partners and allowed to lead their own healing process? I know what I’ve found to be most important, and I’ve shared it with you here on this special infographic. I’ve created this as a special gift to encourage and inspire you! As you can see, my idea of a “perfect” session isn’t about expectations of how the animal should behave or focused on specific healing outcomes. It’s not focused on hand positions or traditional practitioner protocol. Rather, the ideal …

Reiki for cats

If you are looking for a gentle and noninvasive technique for supporting feline wellness, look no further than Reiki. Reiki can create relaxation and peace in even the most stressed-out cases-thus it is ideal for cats living in loving homes, as well as shelter and rescued cats. Reiki can help to speed healing after surgery or illness, reduce side-effects of medicine and other treatments, relieve pain, improve behavior problems, heal anxiety-related problems and, when physical healing isn’t possible, ease the transition to death. The system of Reiki is Japanese in origin. “Rei” …

Ki-Koi’s Story

Ki Koi was a very sick fish in January 2004, in fact so sick that her person was afraid she wouldn’t make it. She was not responding to the medicine she was given, and was listless and refused to eat. She was so tiny, that her person knew if she didn’t eat soon, she would die. When Kathleen began the Reiki treatment, Ki Koi was very still and propped at a 45 degree angle at the bottom of the water. Her gills fluttered weakly. From the very beginning of the treatment, Kathleen …

Remembering Godiva

Godiva passed away in July 2006, while in my sister’s arms. I was honored to be able to be present to offer Reiki to both my sister and Godiva during this difficult time. Although a tiny physical being, Godiva has always been a gigantic spirit, and we will miss her so very much! I honor her kindness in being a Reiki guide to new students, and also her wisdom in teaching the people in her life the lessons of love and forgiveness, hope and joy, and the power and resilience of …

Reiki Helps Bernadette’s Fear of Fireworks

We miss your presence and honor your memory, Bernadette, and will always remember your bright spirit! Bernadette (aka Birdy) is a somewhat chubby and intractable older cat who has a deep fear of thunder and fireworks. At the first boom, she trudges down the hallway to the bedroom and crawls into the darkest corner under the bed and stays there. The space is really too small for her body, but despite the discomfort, she won’t come out until hours after the noise stops. So this year, Bernadette’s person asked me to send …

Improving Boo’s Quality of Life

One of my clients was a 19-year-old cat named Boo, whom I never met in person but sent regular distant treatments. Boo’s health had been gradually deteriorating following a stroke-like seizure in 1997. Due to his fragile condition, he wasn’t a candidate for any kind of surgery, and it wasn’t possible to establish with certainty the exact cause of his problems. He had experienced a short seizure in early 2003, but there was nothing further the vet could do for him. His person was advised that further “neurological events” were likely, …

A Visit from Cassy

Distant Reiki is a great way to heal your animal’s past as well as your own. Sometimes this can happen during the same treatment, as I learned from a treatment I gave to my cat Cassy, who passed away several years ago. The reason for the treatment came about in an unusual way. Elizabeth had called to tell me of a mother cat she was working with who didn’t trust humans after her kittens were aborted. I started thinking about the cat that I had as a child. She was fixed while …

Kay and Clarence

One treatment I gave to a horse taught me the value in allowing animals to choose whether or not to receive hands-on Reiki. This particular horse was a beautiful dark bay mare named Kay. She had a difficult past and needed Reiki to help her release some emotional memories. During the first treatment, I treated her from inside her stall, a few feet away. By the end of the treatment, she had pushed her chest into my hands and fell into a deep sleep, her nose lightly touching my shoulder. However, when …
